Bringing People Together Through Racing

At Holbeck Together, we know that tackling loneliness and social isolation is about creating opportunities for people to connect, build confidence and try something new.

That is why we have been incredibly fortunate to work with Pontefract Racecourse, Racing Together, Jo Foster Racing and Wakefield RDA on a series of activities designed to bring our community together through the world of racing.

More Than Just a Day at the Races

For Holbeck Together, this partnership has always been about much more than racing. It has been about helping people get out of the house, meet others, start conversations, build friendships and enjoy experiences they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to access.

Our clients have attended race meetings where they have been able to meet jockeys, trainers and members of the wider racing community. For some, it was their first ever visit to a racecourse, while others had never had the chance to see a horse up close.

The impact has been fantastic to see.

Being around the horses created a sense of calm and enjoyment for many of our clients, while providing a shared experience that gave people something new to talk about and enjoy together.

Bringing the Experience Into Our Community

The project has also given us the wonderful opportunity to welcome racehorses and ponies to our own community centre.

These visits brought plenty of excitement and conversation to the centre and, most importantly, created some very special memories for the people we support. It is these moments that demonstrate how powerful new experiences can be in helping people feel connected, valued and part of their community.
